Step by Step Guide on How to Grow Onions:
1. Select which onion variety you would like to grow.
Onions come in many varieties:
White onions are a classic, all-purpose onion with a mild flavor and crisp texture. They are great for salads, sandwiches, and soups!
Red onions are a bit sweeter and have a mild flavor, making them perfect for salads and sandwiches.
Yellow onions are also mild but with a slightly stronger flavor, great for sautéing and roasting.
Sweet onions are the sweetest of all the onions, with a mild flavor, and are perfect for adding a touch of sweetness to dishes!
So...pick whichever sounds the tastiest to you!
2. Choose the perfect spot to plant your onions.
Onions need lots of sun and thrive in well-draining soil. The spot you choose should ideally get at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
3. Sow your seeds.
Plant the seeds roughly 1-2 inches deep and about 4 inches apart.
4. Keep your onions hydrated.
Make sure to keep the soil consistently moist by watering regularly.
5. Fertilize your onions.
When your onion plants reach around 4 inches in height, it's time to give them a nitrogen-rich fertilizer.
6. Thin your onions.
Also around the 4 inch mark...you'll want to also thin them out so that they are spaced (at least 4-6 inches apart) to give the remaining plants enough room to grow.
7. Time to harvest!
When the leaves begin to turn yellow, your onions are ready to be harvested. Using a shovel, carefully dig up the onions, being careful not to damage the bulbs.
8. Cure your onions.
Lay your onions in a single layer out in the sun to cure. This will help to toughen the skins and improve their flavor.
9. Store your onions.
Once the onions are cured, you'll want to store them in a cool, dark place for several months.
